Best Dahabiya Nile Cruise in Egypt

No engines. No crowds. Just wind, water, and 3,000 years of history drifting past your deck chair. A Dahabiya Nile Cruise is the closest you’ll get to sailing the Nile the way explorers once did — a traditional boat carrying only a handful of guests, gliding silently between Luxor and Aswan while the giant Nile cruise ships thunder past.

This is slow travel at its finest: private moorings, sunrise temple visits before the tour buses arrive, and front-row seats to sites like Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings without the noise. Whether it’s the centrepiece of a full Egypt tour package or a quiet finale after exploring Aswan, a Dahabiya doesn’t just take you down the river — it slows you down enough to actually see it.

Egypt adventure with Momo Exploring Egypt on a small group tour with Momo was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. Having an Egyptologist as our guide completely transformed every temple, tomb, and monument from “ancient ruins” into living history. His knowledge was incredible, but what made the tour truly special was the way he brought thousands of years of Egyptian history to life with fascinating stories, humour, and insight. From the towering temples of Karnak and Abu Simbel to the breathtaking pyramids of Giza and the treasures of the Grand Egyptian Museum, every site felt more meaningful because of Momo’s explanations. He had a talent for pointing out details most tourists would easily miss — hidden symbols, stories behind the hieroglyphics, and the lives of the pharaohs who once ruled this extraordinary civilisation. Travelling in a small group made the whole experience relaxed, personal, and enjoyable. There was plenty of opportunity to ask questions, take photos, and really absorb the atmosphere without feeling rushed. Momo was organised, friendly, and genuinely passionate about sharing the wonders of Egypt with us. Cruising along the Nile, watching sunsets over ancient temples, and hearing the history of Egypt told by someone who truly loves his country made this journey unforgettable. If you want more than just sightseeing and are looking for a deeper, richer understanding of Egypt, I highly recommend a tour with Momo. It was an adventure filled with history, culture, laughter, and memories that will stay with us forever. We were more than travellers, we were family.

Our Egypt holiday This has been one of the most amazing holidays we have ever experienced, all thanks to Momo. As a passionate and highly knowledgeable Egyptologist, his understanding of Egypt’s history, culture, and landmarks is truly incredible. Every tour, story, and explanation brought the ancient world to life in such a fascinating and engaging way. Momo made sure that every single moment of our holiday was spectacular, informative, and filled with joy. His warmth, kindness, and sense of humour made us feel comfortable from the very beginning, and he went above and beyond to ensure everyone in the group had a wonderful experience. What made this trip even more special was the way Momo connected us as a group, encouraging us to support and look out for one another throughout the journey. By the end of the trip, we didn’t just feel like tourists — we felt like friends sharing an unforgettable adventure together. We are so grateful for the care, professionalism, and passion Momo brought to every day of our travels. If you are planning a trip to Egypt, we could not recommend him more highly. He truly made this holiday unforgettable.

The sort of thing that simply doesn't happen. Except it did. You know how it goes, strangers thrown together on a boat, the Nile sliding past, and somewhere between the first dinner and the last sundowner, something rather extraordinary occurs. You become a tribe. Meanwhile, three thousand years of gods and pharaohs and scandalous queens drift by on the banks. One keeps pinching oneself. Surely not. Surely this is the dream one has before the alarm goes off. And yet... Thank you, Momo, keeper of secrets, reader of stones, and the finest guide the ancients never knew they will have.

the feeling of safety and comfort with the persons who helped us in our trip to Egypt. The whole trip was tailored according to our wishes and it was executed perfectly. The NASCO tours in Alexandria and the NORSTAR co in Athens, were beyond our expectations. The hotels, the bus, the guides were excellent. Our cruise from Aswan to Luxor with the DAHABIYA STORIA 2026 was a dream!! It belongs to a luxury chain of cruises, the staff very polite and helpful, the chef was for a first class restaurant. our guide in Alex. was Mrs. Zahraa ADEL AWAD and in Cairo MR. Mostafa Gamal. Both very educated trying to make our trip perfect. I fully recommend the two tours agencies and the two guides who made our trip a dream.

Egypt with MoMo 10/10 If you want history, laughs, great photos, and a stress-free trip, ask for MoMo. I’ve just had two weeks in Egypt, it is simply incredible, however Egypt with MoMo is next level. As a qualified Egyptologist MoMo knows absolutely everything about Egypt, he has such a love of history combined with a passion for knowledge and I’m convinced if you asked him who moved a specific rock in the pyramid 4,000 years ago, he’d probably know that guy’s name and what he had for lunch. He made thousands of years of history actually fun. Instead of the usual “walk here, look at rock, move on” tour, we got stories, jokes, and just enough sarcasm to keep everyone on their toes - Family Attack! 😆 Also impressive: he has the supernatural ability to dodge crowds, find the best photo spots, and keep a group of confused Aussies (and one English) tourists moving in the right direction (which, honestly, deserves some kind of award). Yalla Yalla Family!! He kept us organised, safe, and always one step ahead of the crowds like some kind of pyramid-tour ninja. Our tour group connected like family becoming friends for life facilitated by MoMo, I am convinced that he is Ramses and also secretly built the pyramids himself however he is just too humble to admit it. 10/10 guide. Highly recommend. Egypt is incredible, but Egypt with MoMo is basically the VIP delux version.

Highly recommend I had an absolutely wonderful experience on this tour, and a huge part of that was thanks to Momo. His patience, fantastic sense of humour, and incredible knowledge made every day both enjoyable and informative. He really brought each place to life and created such a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. I was also lucky to be part of a fabulous group, and together it made the whole experience even more special. It’s been one of those trips filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories that I know I’ll look back on for years to come. Thank you, Momo, for looking after us so well and making the trip so memorable. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide!

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Before You Visit Egypt

Everything you need to know before visiting — visas, seasons, and Tips

Online Appling

Recommended for all

International travellers can apply for Egypt’s e-Visa online before departure, taking around 5-7 business days. It’s the fastest, easiest entry option.

Visa on Arrival

Available at all major airports

Visa on arrival is available at Cairo and other major airports for most nationalities, paid in cash. Lines can be long in peak season, so e-Visa is faster.

Passport Validity

Check before you book

Your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of arrival in Egypt, with at least one blank visa page kept free for entry stamps.

Length of Stay

Single & multiple entry

The standard Egypt tourist visa permits a full 30-day stay, giving ample time for your Dahabiya Nile Cruise plus Cairo, Luxor, or Red Sea add-ons.

Autumn

October – November

20–28°C

20–28°C. The most popular season for British travellers. Comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds, and stunning sunsets over the Nile. Perfect for first-time visitors and families during half-term.

Winter

December – February

14–24°C

14–24°C . Cool and clear — ideal for full-day sightseeing at Luxor, Aswan, and the Pyramids without the heat. Very popular with UK travellers escaping winter. Book early: Christmas and New Year sell out fast.

Spring

March – April

25–34°C

25–34°C. March and April are excellent — temples are quieter, Nile cruises are smooth, and the light for photography is beautiful. Half-term in February also aligns well with early spring travel.

Summer

May – September

33–43°C

33–43°C inland. Peak heat, but great value for budget-conscious UK travellers and perfect for Red Sea beach extensions in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Sightseeing is best done at sunrise

Money & Currency

Bring your home currency or US dollars to exchange for Egyptian pounds; ATMs are available in Luxor and Aswan before boarding. Carry small bills for tipping crew, guides, and vendors at temple stops along your Dahabiya route.

What to Wear

Pack light, breathable layers plus one warm layer for cool Nile evenings, even in the warmer months. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is respectful at temples, and comfortable shoes suit uneven ancient stone.

Sun & Hydration

Egypt’s sun is intense even on cooler cruise days, so pack SPF 50, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat. Drink bottled water constantly onboard and ashore, since first-time visitors often underestimate Nile Valley heat and dryness.

Photography

Golden hour on the Nile from your Dahabiya deck delivers unforgettable shots, especially at Kom Ombo and Edfu. Pack extra memory cards and a padded bag, since dust and bright desert light can be demanding on camera gear ashore.

Health

Pack prescription medications in original labelled containers with a doctor’s note, plus basic travel insurance covering Egypt. Onboard Dahabiya crews carry first-aid kits, though nearby towns have pharmacies for minor needs.

Culture & Etiquette

Egyptians are famously warm and welcoming, so a simple greeting goes a long way. Ask before photographing local people, dress modestly at religious sites, and tip crew and guides in cash, since it supports their income directly.

A Dahabiya Nile Cruise is a traditional Egyptian sailing boat that offers a luxury, small-group journey on the Nile River, usually between Luxor and Aswan. Unlike large cruise ships, Dahabiyas carry only a limited number of guests (often 8–24), creating a more private, quiet, and personalized experience. The boat is primarily wind-powered, giving travelers a peaceful and authentic sailing experience.
