Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). USD is widely accepted at hotels and major sites. Canadian dollars are not commonly exchanged locally — bring USD or use ATMs in Cairo. Credit cards work at hotels and larger restaurants.
Pack light, breathable clothing for daytime, with a layer for cool evenings. Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and temples. A scarf is ideal for both sun protection and site entry. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Egypt’s sun is stronger than most Canadians expect year-round. Apply SPF 50+ and reapply throughout the day. Drink 2–3 litres of bottled water daily. Avoid tap water — bottled water is cheap and available everywhere.

Egyptians are famously warm and welcoming. Tipping (bakshish) is customary — EGP 50–100 per day for guides and drivers. Greet locals with “As-salamu alaykum.” Ask permission before photographing people. Bargaining is expected in markets.
