Arrive at Luxor International Airport or Luxor Train Station, where a representative is waiting to greet you and assist with a smooth transfer to your hotel. Luxor, once ancient Thebes, was the political and religious capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom, and its temples and tombs remain among the richest concentrations of pharaonic monuments anywhere in the world.
Check-in is available from early afternoon, and depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is either left free to rest by the Nile or used to begin sightseeing with visits to Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple.
Luxor Temple sits directly on the Nile Corniche and was once linked to Karnak by a nearly two-mile processional road lined with sphinxes, much of which has now been excavated and can be walked today. Karnak, the larger of the two complexes, was built and expanded over some two thousand years by successive pharaohs, and its Hypostyle Hall of towering columns is considered one of the great architectural achievements of the ancient world.

This is the centerpiece of the tour. The morning is set aside for the total solar eclipse, visible from Luxor over a window of several hours around midday, with the moon fully covering the sun for a brief period of totality when day turns to dusk and the temperature noticeably drops. Your guide will position the group at a suitable viewing location and advise on timing so you don’t miss the key moments.
Once the eclipse has passed and the sky returns to normal, the tour crosses the Nile to the West Bank, home to the necropolis of ancient Thebes. Here you’ll explore the Valley of the Kings, where more than sixty tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs, including Tutankhamun, were cut into the desert cliffs and decorated with elaborate scenes from the Book of the Dead and other funerary texts.
Nearby stand the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Amenhotep III that once guarded the entrance to his now-vanished mortuary temple. The afternoon continues at the Temple of Hatshepsut, a striking terraced structure built into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari for Egypt’s most famous female pharaoh, before a stop at a local alabaster workshop to see artisans carving stone vessels using techniques passed down for generations.

For those who booked it in advance, the day can begin before dawn with an optional hot air balloon flight, lifting off from the West Bank for sweeping aerial views over the Valley of the Kings, the cultivated fields along the Nile, and the temples below as the sun rises. It’s widely considered one of the most memorable ways to see Luxor’s landscape and is a popular add-on for this tour, though it’s weather-dependent and subject to confirmation closer to the date.
Later in the morning, the group returns to whichever of Karnak Temple or Luxor Temple wasn’t visited on Day 1, giving you time to look more closely at the hieroglyphic inscriptions, colossal statues, obelisks, and columned courts without the time pressure of a first visit. This is also a good opportunity for photography and for your guide to go deeper into the history and mythology behind specific reliefs and chapels.
